Why are we doing this???

Just three days and Fred and I will be on our way to follow in the footsteps of countless pilgrims who have gone before us in a 500 mile trek across northern Spain. We are not really sure why we have chosen such an endeavor.  This is actually a common theme for people who walk The Camino. The reason for the journey seems to be answered in the journey itself. We will see.

The desire to walk The Camino, otherwise known as The Way of St. James, came as a result of watching the movie "The Way" starring Martin Sheen. Our son was watching it with us and on completion of the movie he declared that "it was totally something we should do".

Although my husband and I are walking this ancient path together, it is really a personal passage for each of us, hence the title of this blog. (Fred is journaling the old fashioned way - paper & pen). We may share mutual experiences but the reaction and impact will be uniquely our own.

Despite just beginning this blog, we have been preparing for this trek over the past year and a half. We have read several books written by pilgrims (peregrinos) past, evaluated the weight of every item we plan to take with us, obtained our pilgrim passports, tried multiple backpacks and hiking boots and walked several miles in preparation. I also purchased a mirrorless camera to  lighten my load but still allow me to take pictures without compromising my desire for artistic control.

The decision to blog is not only to document our pilgrimage for ourselves, but also to provide a means for our family and friends to join us surreptitiously along "The Way." I hope you enjoy the journey as much as we!
